You have lost your progamming job. What next?

Twitter has bled off 50%-75% of employees. Amazon has laid off thousands. Many other companies are downsizing. Even with that there are more programming jobs than people. Especially for people with more than five years experience. This is just going to be a blip not a long term trend.

First a warning, never bad mouth the company or your fellow employees. You might want to go back some day. And you certainly don't want to be sued. HR of both your old company and your new company will read all of your published work (and a lot you did not think was published). They will certainly read all of your company email. Social media is not your friend.

Never disclose more than you can defend. I never told any company my religion, my personal philosophy, my deep beliefs, or my personal history. I only told them of my health issues when absolutely required. I disclosed these items only after I retired. Keep work as work, and personal as personal. Only disclose things to people you trust face to face.

Simple, normal, items are: find health insurance, apply for unemployment, update your resume, and get your paperwork in order.
