I hate the word myth.

To call belief a myth is an unforgivable insult.

If you are a genuine believer in a religion, any religion, then all other religions, ancient and current, are based on myths. What you believe in, of course, is the truth. And some consider secular humanism, atheism, and science to be religions based on myths.

A myth (google definition):

1. a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.

2. a widely held but false belief or idea.

People who believed in other religions, including ancient ones, had faith, followed the teachings, prayed, learned about their religion, fought, died, and were martyred. Their belief does not differ from the current set of religions. Yet we call their religion myths.

The Greek Spartans, when they left to confront the Persian invasion with 300 men. They only took that number of men because of their religion. Their religion had a law against war during the feast of Apollo. Thus, the king could only take his bodyguard, the 300. They were fighting for Greece, Sparta, their religion, and their law.
